I’d Like to Eat: And Drink These Beers

This summer has been a hot one and what better way to cool off than some yummy summertime brews. This is when we enjoy the crisper and lighter weight beer options with a penchant for pale ales, radlers, pilsners, and my favorite – IPAs. I find that these are great to bring along with you on outdoor adventures where a refreshing beverage will be appreciated  Here is list of a few of our favorites thus far this summer…

Stiegl Radler – A grapefruit based beverage that is very bubbly and crisp. Part juice. Part beer. All good.

Ginger-Lemon Radler – Boulevard Brewing, zesty with a wonderful ginger bite.

Not Your Father’s Root Beer – The name says it all. I think I will try this on vanilla ice cream.

Twain’s Berry Tart  – Visit this Decatur, Georgia based brewery and try this not too sweet balanced treat.

Terrapin Recreation Ale – A summer session ale that packs great flavor that pairs well with anything served at a BBQ. It comes in a can so it is perfect for the pool and beach!

Prince of Pilsen – Three Taverns does it again with this Eurostyle Pilsner. Good intro for craft beer  noobs.

Glimmerglass –  Ommegang consistently delivers and this one is another winner. If you have never tried a Saison/Farmhouse Ale start with this one.

As you can tell from the photo above we have a few beers waiting to be loved in our fridge. Find out what I think about them by following me on Twitter @mpinkelton, or by friending me on the most marvelous beer app around Untappd.

I’d Like to Eat- Anything at Makan

Last night I enjoyed a fine meal with an old friend at Makan. This Chinese/Korean spot located in the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Decatur has been open for nearly a year and it is a great addition to the local food scene. Everything from the service, to the spirits, to the delectable food was perfect.

We tried several options from their Happy Hour menu which serves half priced delights from 5-7pm. I highly recommend their Pork Belly Buns and House Seasonal Kimchi. My husband will be surprised by that second choice as I usually don’t like Kimchi but recently it has been growing on me. The recipe they use includes ginger which is one of my favorite flavors. For the main course I enjoyed their spicy ramen with overnight pork. This dish is perfect for the colder months or, if you are like me, for people battling seasonal allergies. That hot kick really opens your sinuses up.

I washed it all down with this crazy, cloudy beverage that is presented in a tea pot and drunk from a bowl called Kooksoondang- Draft Makkoli. It is a wine/saki type drink that is served cold. I am adventurous in my cocktails and this adventure did not disappoint. It has the full flavor that you usually find with saki but somehow they dialed it back a notch and it was quite pleasant.  Of course I had to take a photo of the bottle because it is not possible that I will be able to remember that name to find it on a menu.

A few photos from my pretty meal…

What yummy food have you eaten recently???

I’d Like to Eat – There’s a New Crack Rock in Town

No one can eat just one!

No one can eat just one!

So my mother-in-law brought these things into our house? Have you had them yet? They are great if you like Raisinets but horrible if you don’t. They are also horrible if someone leaves a one pound bag of them in your house when your husband hates Rasinets! These don’t have raisins in them but the Acai & blueberry textures are reminiscent of them which turned my husband off and me on!

Here they sit on this rainy Sunday afternoon just begging someone to eat them all. I can have self control. I can pace myself! I may need to just dump them in the trash. I have really jumped back on my water drinking salad eating lifestyle that really had no room for candy. Acai and Blueberries are good for you and they are covered in dark chocolate!

Who am I kidding? I will send a prayer to the food gods and hope that when my will does break I don’t have a repeat epodes of the 1987 Whopper debacle. I won’t go into detail, but I will say that when you eat an entire box of Whoppers in one sitting they taste so good going down, but not so delish on the return trip back up.

I’d Like to Eat – Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Words cannot express how bad my health will be when this restaurant opens its Atlanta location. Now don’t rush to think I will hold them accountable for my ever growing waistline. It is up to me to be strong enough to stay away from their doors and just say no, but look at that plate. There is a reason that Gus’s friend chicken is world famous. I’m sure your mother’s and grandmother’s fried chicken is great. Really tasty even. But I am confident when I think even they will say this chicken kicks ass.

My first visit to Gus’s was their original location in Memphis, Tennessee. I stood online for roughly and hour and it was definitely worth it. The interior was nothing to write home about but I was not there for the ambiance. I was there to eat. And eating was what I did. It is my belief that God himself made those chickens to create a rare heaven on Earth experience.

Two years after trying Gus’s, my husband and I went to a book signing and speaking engagement by uber-foodie host Adam Richman. My husband wore his Gus’s t-shirt and the reaction by Richman when we approached him to have our book signed was hilarious! “Oh my GOD I love Gus’s. Are you from Memphis? “, Richmond asked with the biggest smile on his face. My husband responded, “No, but I used to live there”, to which Richmond quickly responded, “The secret is to bring your own honey. They have hot sauce but not honey to put on your chicken. You gotta do that the next time you go.” Note made and stored. It may sound tacky and ratchet, but when people offer you tips on how to make that perfect food even more perfect you don’t ask questions. You remember it for next time.

Eating Gus’s gives you the type of gluttonous satisfaction that should only happen once or twice a year depending on your current cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. The fact that the nearest Gus’s is hundreds of miles away has worked in my favor. I yearn for it from time to time but it is not realistically obtainable so I consume other (less gloriously grease covered) foods. Their expansion plans that include Peachtree Center in downtown Atlanta makes the trip needed to take to eat that fine food considerably shorter. I have yet to find an actual opening date, but on their website they have Atlanta and eight other cities listed as future locations. All I know is that it is coming.

Pray for me people.

Also pray for anyone standing in front of me on opening day.
