The Butter Battle Book

What We Are Reading – January 7th

I have taken the kid to the library on several occasions. It wasn’t until this past weekend that it clicked with him that library equals free! He is so used to me telling him that there are limits to the amount of things we get based on need and cost. The concept that all of these awesome books were ours for the taking blew his mind.

After much looking and a stack of roughly 20 books, we settled on eight books to take home. We would have taken more but I feared I would surely lose one of them in our own growing home library. Here are his favorites …

The Butter Battle Book

The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss

The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss is addictively rhymey in that Seuss sort of way. His odd names for people places and things are always fun for kids.  This book is my favorite in the bunch as it is a great commentary on the stupid things we go to war over.

Big Momma Makes the World

Big Momma Makes the World by Helen Oxenbury

Helen Oxenbury’s tale has to be the prettiest story of how the Earth was made that was ever told. In between caring for her baby and getting her daily chores done she manages to create this place we call hime. We have read this one four times already.

Zoopa: An Animal Alphabet by Gianna Marino

Zoopa: An Animal Alphabet by Gianna Marino

This is one of the kid’s favorites as he is able to completely read the book himself. As you progress through the alphabet various creatures whose names begin with those letters appear until SPOILER ALERT the pages are crammed with all sorts of insects and wildlife.

Superlove by Charise Mericle Harper

Superlove by Charise Mericle Harper

All Superlove wants is to be the flower girl in the wedding of her stuffed dog named Mr. Mittens and the family cat Pinky. Surprise surprise, the cat wants nothing to do with it! What will happen? Will this May/December romance work out? You will have to read it for yourself to find out.

What gems have you found at the library?

Be Merry Be Bright

What We Are Reading, Drinking, Watching and Wrapping This Christmas Eve….

Be Merry Be Bright

Well we finally have the kid nestled in his bed. I don’t know if there are visions of sugar plums dancing in his head. More than likely, it will be filled with visions of sugar cookies and super heroes. It had been a busy day here in the Pinkelton house. Here is a quick list of what’s been going on between our decked walls.

We are reading this to the kid

Watching this on the tube. And this too.

Drinking this work of art in a glass.

Preparing this for breakfast tomorrow.

Eating this for dinner as I was too pooped to cook.

Happy Christmas to you all!!!

The DC Comic Encyclopedia

What We Are Reading – December 9th

This installment of What We Are Reading is comic focused, surprise!!! You know the Pinkelton household likes to read comics and my book pics for this week are all graphically driven. Here goes…..

Tiny Titans Sidekickin' It

Tiny Titans Sidekickin’ It by Art Balthazar Franco

Aaron has his face in this series as usual and requests we read him a few of the stories every night before bedtime. The books reference characters who grow up to become real adult heroes and villains. A few of these good and bad guys are unfamiliar to me which means that after he goes to sleep I have to reference…

The DC Comic Encyclopedia

The DC Comics Encyclopedia

Yes this book does exist and yes it does rock. We also have the Marvel version this and both of them are read for fun and as reference guides. You must have them on hand if your kid or you are into the comic world.

Understanding Comics

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud

In catching up on my Girl on Guy podcast listening, Aisha Tyler and her guest Scott Gimple of the Walking Dead spoke of this book.  It gets deep into the history, meaning, and art behind of of my favorite forms of literature. I have a few weeks off for the holiday and hope to get this one read by the new year.

What are you guys reading this holiday season?

The Numberlys Cover

What We Are Reading – November 14th

The Numberlys Cover

The Numberlys by William Joyce & Christina Ellis

This is quite possibly the most beautiful children’s book ever. The cover design, the contrasting colors, the adorable little people, the zany way that they lay words on the page, the tale itself – love, love, love. This is the story of a land without letters, only numbers. Names are numbers, foods are numbers, places…are numbers. When five friends (named 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) explore the possibility of something MORE, magical things begin. In this homage to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis children learn the beauty in stepping away from the “usual”, creating something new, and changing the entire world in the process.
