My Quarters Magazine Article – Through the Looking Glass: Things I Wish I Had Known in My 20s

One of the best time during my 20s

One of the best times during my 20s

As I approach this thing called middle-age, it seems fitting that I was asked to do a piece on looking through the wormhole – what I wish I had known in my 20s. My first instinct was to simply say , “The winning lottery numbers for the next 10 years,” but I digress.

My name is not Biff Tannen (that is a “Back to the Future” reference for you young whipper snappers) and I completely believe that the space-time continuum is not to be trifled with. I have to stick to what wisdom could have realistically served me without massive monetary gain. My list is full of worries and doubt that kept me up at night, made me doubt my talents, my brains and most of the choices that I have made for the last 20 years.

Sunday Morning Muffins

Excellent muffin morning

I have been trying to bake at least once every weekend. Not because I want to be like the Pioneer Woman or weight 300 pounds; (OK maybe we all want to be a little bit like the Pioneer Woman) but because I want weekends in our home to be a time for family fun and making things. Yesterday we made a few messes and that was about it.

I had seen this recipe from Martha Stewart for blueberry muffins and made them this morning. They are mom and toddler approved! We will find out dad’s opinion when he finally wakes up. I have been trying not to waste food and this made use of the rest of some organic strawberries we had. Any kind of berry or fruit is good in them.

What recipes do you have that prevent food going to waste?

Everything Is Better With. . .

BACON!!!!
The last piece of bacon. Yes that is grease it is sitting in.
It is 9:53 on Saturday morning and because I have a two year-old I have been up since 7:00. This has given me time to build multiple forts, have two cups of coffee, serve up a plate of fruit for the boy and a plate of bacon for me. There is something that screams, “This is proof of a higher power” when you bite into a slice of thick cut maple bacon. Ahhhhhh.

Now my day can begin. Go forth and eat pig meat the way the good Lord intended.

This Week in Pictures

How was your week and your 4th? While my work week was short, it was busy and jam packed. Right now I am enjoying a quiet house as Joe is sleeping and Aaron is off at school.  Golden are the moments when you are both inspired and able to go where your inspiration takes you.

Here are some shots of my past week. . .

Old Fourth Ward Park and the O4W Arts Festival last weekend.

Aaron wowing his classmates with his American flag painting.

Me in my lovely Iram-Inal necklace from Beehive Atlanta
Sugar and carbs anyone? How I love Revolution Doughnuts!

How will you spend time this weekend? I plan on eating some good food and drinking some even better beer.
